Hi, I’m Dr. Karen Gless, PhD, MFT, RN, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Hypnotherapist. I have a private psychotherapy practice in San Diego, California. For over 14 years I have been specializing in sex therapy for individuals and couples. In order to help my clients I developed the Pure Pleasure Series of self-hypnosis CDs for a great sex life.
My focus is to help couples and individuals overcome their sexual problems and have satisfying, rewarding relationships. My training as a nurse helps me understand the physical and medical side of sexual problems. It is my goal to help couples enjoy all areas of their relationship.
Because the world we live in is fast-paced and noisy and we are bombarded with new information constantly, we might not realize that we often are making choices out of defensiveness or reactivity or fear. This overwhelming confusion keeps us from understanding ourselves and keeps us from making better choices.
In therapy, I provide a safe, non-judgmental place to slow down - a place for you to search inside for your own voice, your needs and your heart’s desire. Together we will discover for you:
My passion is to help people resolve their emotional problems as quickly and deeply as possible. I use an accelerated form of therapy that is called Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP).
ISTDP helps people get to their core feelings (the physical sensations of their emotions) and impulses (the action tendency of their emotions) that they have defended against and pushed down since the time of their trauma. The traumas usually are attachment bond ruptures with parents in which the ruptures were never repaired and the traumatic behavior never fully processed.

I am an experienced, caring therapist who focuses on your strengths, helping you to find answers from within. Since it is often difficult to make the decision to come into counseling, I assist you in identifying the changes you want to make in your life and support you through that process with respect and compassion. In a warm, nurturing environment, we focus on seeing new options, and finding internal strength and self-empowerment.
